The Houston Texans are considering the possibility of moving on from their current home and building a new stadium, according to a report. The Houston Chronicle published a report Wednesday citing unnamed sources familiar with the situation that said the team is examining options for a new stadium — a scenario which could open doors for attracting major events and place a new burden on taxpayers.

The Houston Texans may want a new football stadium. NRG Stadium was built in 2002 and has been the Houston Texans’ home since. But now, the team is in the middle of negotiating a new lease agreement for the stadium.

The Harris County-Houston Sports Authority still owes $1B in principal debt on bond money used to build NRG Stadium, Daikin Park and the Toyota Center. The Texans are also paid more in tax rebates than they pay in rent to play at NRG Stadium, so local government could be reluctant to offer more incentives.
