A doorbell camera has captured the remarkable moment a meteorite struck the ground outside a home, scattering dust and producing audible impact sounds—a historic first, according to University of Alberta scientist Chris Herd.

Throughout history, only a select few people who were in the right place at the right time could say they’ve heard the sound of a meteor hitting Earth. But that group is about to get a whole lot bigger after the phenomena was caught on camera.

Sound and video of a meteorite was caught by a Ring doorbell camera in the Atlantic Canada province of P.E.I. last July. Scientists believe it’s the first footage of its kind.

For the first confirmed time in P.E.I.’s history, a meteorite landed on the Island and the event was captured on camera. An expert from the University of Alberta believes it’s also the first time the sound of a meteorite striking Earth has ever been recorded.
