The U.S. has hit its lowest-ever ranking on the 2025 World Happiness Report, while Nordic countries continue to dominate the list.

Overall, researchers said global evidence on the perceived and actual return of lost wallets shows that people are much too pessimistic about the kindness of their communities compared to reality—actual rates of wallet return are around twice as high as people expect.

The happiest country in the world is Finland, which took the No. 1 spot for the eighth consecutive year. European countries dominated the top of the list, with Denmark No. 2, Iceland at No. 3, Sweden at No. 4 and Netherlands at No. 5.
