Oil and gas companies could be on the hook for billions of dollars to compensate for environmental pollution after Gov. Kathy Hochul on Thursday signed the Climate Change Superfund Act, a long-cherished priority for advocates who blame global warming on fossil fuels.

Gov. Kathy Hochul approved a controversial law that will force oil, natural-gas and coal companies to fork over a staggering $75 billion to the state for spewing carbon emissions and contributing to climate change.

Larrañaga will be replaced by associate head coach Bill Courtney — one of Larrañaga’s best friends for the past three decades or so — for the remainder of the season, the person said. Jim Larranaga has stepped down as Miami's men's basketball coach, the school announced Thursday. Larranaga, who turned 75 in October, took over at Miami in 2011. In his 14 seasons at the helm, he led the Hurricanes to six NCAA tournaments and four Sweet 16 appearances -- including a Final Four run in 2023.
