Israeli military offensives in two West Bank refugee camps have displaced nearly 5,500 Palestinian families since December, local and UN officials said Tuesday, amid escalating violence in the occupied territory.

Israel's military says two soldiers have been killed in a shooting attack in the occupied West Bank, as its forces continue a major operation against Palestinian armed groups in the north of the territory.

At least two Israeli soldiers were killed early on Tuesday after a gunman opened fire at an Israeli military post in the occupied West Bank, according to Israeli officials. The Israeli military said the soldiers returned fire and the Palestinian gunman was later killed.

The West Bank is the new battleground in Israel’s post-Oct. 7 war. Jenin refugee camp is the front line. On Sunday, Israeli forces razed 23 buildings in Jenin, cutting a swath through the camp with simultaneous explosions that were heard across much of the northern West Bank.

Two IDF reservist soldiers were killed and eight were wounded in a terrorist shooting attack at a military stand near Tayasir in the northern West Bank-Jordan Valley area, at a time when security concerns about rising terror activity from the territory have increased due to the release of Palestinian security prisoners as part of the Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal.
