The MLW RS-18 was an 1,800 hp (1,340 kW) diesel-electric locomotive built by Montreal Locomotive Works between December 1956 and August 1968. It replaced the RS-10 in MLW's catalogue, and production totalled 351 locomotives, to eight customers.

The model RS-18 road-switcher locomotive, built by Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW), was the Canadian version of the Alco-built model RS-11 and was alike in most aspects externally and internally except for having a notchless feather-edge hood peak instead of the deeply notched Alco hood design.

Dec 29, 2022 · In 1956, both ALCO and MLW introduced an updated model (the RS-11 and RS-18, respectively) in which the 244-series engine was replaced with a 12-cylinder 251-series engine producing 1,800 horsepower.

MLW also introduced the 251B engine in late 1956 and put the 12 cylinder 1800 hp version in the RS-10 carbody to produce the uniquely Canadian RS-11M (later renamed RS-18). CN purchased 131 units between 1956 and 1958 and numbered them 3615-3745 (MR-18b, c, d).

Aug 12, 2024 · The RS18, produced by the Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW), was a very successful design that left a significant mark on Canadian railroading. Based from Alco's RS11 in the U.S., the RS18 was built between 1956-1968 and part of the Road Switcher (RS) series.

Early RS-18 units had cast coupler pockets with slightly different dimensions from the fabricated version (illustrated). Fuel tank and air reservoir measurements don't apply to units with transverse fuel tanks and air reservoirs (listed below in RSC-14 measurements).

Jul 5, 2021 · I absolutely wanted a high hood nose locomotive, even if it doesn't fit my modern era, and it just so happens that RS-18s have actually pulled these blue coaches in the past! But there are no RS-18s in n-scale. Or well, there might have been once upon a time, one or two companies that produced shells that were used on Atlas RS-11 mechanisms.

Aug 5, 2019 · Briggs Models has progressed from offering various cast resin parts for RS-18 conversions, to full cast resin carbodies and parts, and now to 3D printed carbodies and parts.

MR-18c 3684 MLW RS-18 1800 hp restored to its original paint scheme as built 1/1958 by MLW #82226. Built to operate long end forward as were all CN road switchers at the time, and equipped with 65 mph gearing, later modified to 75 mph.

Based on the Alco RS-11, the Canadian specific RS-18 (which MLW designated DL-718) was alike in most aspects externally and internally except for the notchless hood ends.
